The John Peel Centre

Created by The John Peel Centre for the Creative Arts on 24th November, 2011

The John Peel Centre for the Creative Arts urgently needs to raise £25,000 before Christmas. Help us reach this target and you too can become a part of his legacy!

The Centre, which is located close to where John used to live in the heart of Suffolk, is currently undergoing major refurbishment which will see the old Stowmarket Corn Exchange transformed into a place where local artists can showcase their skills and audiences can discover new talent right on their doorstep. The project originally arose as a direct response to the growing number of young people and adults who are unable to access fun and interesting artistic activities, and aims to create a positive place for young people to come and bring their artistic talents to life.

John Peel's wife Sheila, who is an honorary patron of the Centre, has said that it will eventually be 'an arts centre that offers a lot of things to a lot of people. John had catholic tastes, so it wasn't just about loud music. He played all sorts of music and that's what we'll be doing. It will be fully developed so that we have rehearsal rooms, performance space and hopefully lots and lots of people will use it'.

The Centre has been granted £500,000 to continue with the great work it's doing, but desperately needs to match fund part of this in order to keep up with the refurbishment plan. £25,000 urgently needs to be raised by Christmas; a sum which would really mean a great deal to the Centre.

Exclusive John Peel mini festival: tickets only available to those who pledge a Festive £50 or more! The festival is set to happen in East Anglia in 2012. We have secured an excellent line-up including none other than The Undertones, along with more acts whose careers John championed, to be announced shortly. Please note the pledges have been amended to reflect this offer.

Project Updates

  • What happens now?

    Published on 23rd December, 2011

    Dear All,

Thanks so much for your support both in pledges and via email, twitter and facebook.  We're coming to the end of this first fund raiser and despite not reaching our target we've raised a fantastic amount for the Centre, which is greatly appreciated.  Along the way we have also managed to create the first John Peel Festival for 2012.  Once we're through the holiday season there is going to be a meeting to discuss exactly when this will be, where and with who - although you should already know some of the line up.  We'll then be staying in touch with you about the Festival and other events that will be taking place in 2012.

Have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

  • Festival Update

    Published on 14th December, 2011

    Hi,

So here's some more details about plans for 2012.  We're looking to hold the first John Peel Festival in Norwich during the summer of 2012, but it won't coincide with any other music festivals.  The Undertones are on board as we've already said, The Wedding Present and Bearsuit have both confirmed they will play (subject to date) and we have at least 4-5  more bands that should be confirmed in the next few days.  We've not released this to the press yet, but plan to do so by the end of the week.  We've had some fantastic high pledges now with 3 x £1,000 which is amazing and thank you so much.  We'd love lots of these, but we'd also love some more £50 pledges for tickets.  Please go out and tell all your family, friends, acquaintances that these are an amazing bargain so get them now before Christmas and let's see how far we can get in the next 10 days.

    Best wishes

  • John Peel Mini Festival

    Published on 6th December, 2011

    Dear All,

We're pleased to confirm that plans are now well underway for a John Peel Mini Festival for 2012.  The dates are yet to be confirmed and we are looking at one or more venues in the East of England.  The Undertones have confirmed their interest and we are in discussion with several other acts which we hope to announce in the coming few days.  The more interest we have the more potential that the event will grow.  The cost of a ticket will be a festive £50 and will only be available via pledging.  All those who have pledged £50 will be offered a ticket, or the alternative 2 tickets for a gig at the Centre.  For those who have pledged £10 or £25 they can upgrade if they would like to, whilst £100 pledges will be for 2 tickets,.  We hope to update the Angelshares site shortly.  If you would like to contact us to discuss please email legacy@john-peel.org

    Best wishes

  • John Peel Gigs

    Published on 3rd December, 2011

    Hi

Thanks again to everyone who has pledged and please keep passing the message on.  We've got some exciting news as we're working with the Centre to put on some special gigs, or possibly even a mini John Peel festival for 2012.  We're in discussion with the Undertones and a number of other bands and the way you'll get tickets is via pledging.  We're working out what level of pledge these tickets will be and anyone who has so already pledged will be offered these tickets before anyone else and if they have not pledged enough the opportunity to upgrade.  We'll update you as soon as we can.

    With best wishes

  • Pass the message on

    Published on 1st December, 2011

We'd be really grateful if you could let 10 friends know about your pledge and the centre - hopefully they will pledge and then pass it on.  In the meantime for those of you who are local watch out for BBC Look East reports tomorrow.

    Thanks

  • Certificates and help us get to £1,000 today

    Published on 30th November, 2011

Thanks for all the pledges we've had and we'll be getting our first certificates signed by Sheila tomorrow to send out.  You have the option to be emailed them, as a pdf, or posted out.  The cost to us to post is more, so if you are happy for a pdf that would be great.  if you would like them posted we need you to contact us with your postal address as soon as possible.  you can see a copy of the certificate at:

    http://www.sendspace.com/pro/dl/7ockzb

In the meantime please help us reach £1,000 today by letting everyone know that you've pledged your support, that we need more people and passing on all the tweets, emails and facebook messages.

  • Keep passing the message on

    Published on 29th November, 2011

Thank you to everyone who has supported us so far.  What's been a slow start is beginning to gain momentum so we need to keep at it and the best people to help us are the ones who have already taken the big bold step and pledged their support.  Please tell friends, family, passers by, anyone and everyone you can think of.  We're working on some larger pledges, but to be honest we would be over the moon if we could get hundred of £10 or £25 pledges as we want to build this community.  I was inspired today when I spoke to Andrew Denham of the Bicycle Academy who managed to achieve a £40,000 crowdfunder in just over 5 days!!  He was better prepared than us and still has some days to go if you want to check out http://www.thebicycleacademy.org/

Please do feel free to get in touch and make suggestions too.

We'll keep updaing as we go.

    All the best

    Hi

Thanks for your support and the amount of twittering that is going on.  Unfortunately our twitter account went down on Friday after we got a little overexcited, but we can now be found at @John_PeelLegacy - and in the meantime we've just had a tweet from the King of Twitter Stephen Fry - I hope this will give us a good boost!  Its certainly got the techies worried!
