The Belgrade Theatre playwriting course is an innovative programme aimed at offering adults from Coventry's Black and Minority Ethnic communities the opportunity to develop their playwriting skills and produce a piece of theatre that reflects their community and introduces their voice into mainstream theatre.
In 2008, the Belgrade Theatre - in partnership with The Royal Court, London and The Drum, Birmingham - developed a playwriting course for adults aged 18+ from BME communities. The course has developed the talents of over 40 writers, the more promising of which have gone on to have their work showcased in the Belgrade's B2 auditorium. The Belgrade Theatre plans to offer the playwriting course as part of its 2011/2012 programme, after increased interest from the target community following the success of the previous courses.
The course takes place over 11 weeks and is designed to give the BME Communities in Coventry a voice within mainstream theatre. The course has a practical basis using a range of teaching methods including writing exercises, play reading, discussion, free writing and group work. The participants will also be encouraged to attend productions at the theatre and engage in post show discussions. The participants will be supported by professional writers throughout the course. The proposed project will begin in October 2011 and run for 11 weeks. The money raised from AngelShares will fund a showcase of the scripts developed by participants. The scripts will be read on stage at the Belgrade Theatre by professional actors, allowing the participants to experience their work coming to life on stage. The Showcase is dependant on the fundraising target being achieved.
