A Real Birmingham Family

Created by Ikon Gallery on 10th November, 2011

A real Birmingham family

Ikon Gallery and Birmingham-born artist Gillian Wearing have created a major new project for the city; a quest to find, and immortalise in bronze, a 'real' Birmingham family.

The project launched in Spring 2011 and hundreds of families have come forward to nominate themselves, hoping to be chosen as the family that best represents the city in the 21st Century. Many different types of family are involved, representing the demographic diversity within Birmingham and creating debate around the subject of 'family'. Nominations remain open until April 2012, when a panel of well-known individuals will choose the winning family. This family will then model for a bronze sculpture which will be permanently sited in Centenary Square and unveiled at the opening of the new Library of Birmingham in 2013. We are asking you to help raise funds towards the creation and installation of this major new landmark for the city.
